The idea is to offer all members who have been involved in the project a chance to return back to Macedonia meet old and new friends and revisit some of the project regions. Family and partners will be welcome if you want to make this a small holiday.
Thursday 18th May – Salonika Campaign Battlefield Tour
Whilst we are in the midst of the commemorating the centenary of the First World War Operation Florian will be jointly organising an event with the Salonika Campaign Society. Not too many people are aware of the fact that in 1915 British Troops landed in Salonika (now known as Thessaloniki) and there was the battle in the Valley of Struma (1916) and the First Battle of Doiran (1917). This will be a fantastic opportunity to meet with local historians and have a tour of the trenches and battlefields in the local area of Strumica and Doijran..
Friday 19th May – Operation Florian 10th Anniversary Event, Sveti Nikole Volunteer Fire Dept
This event will take place in the evening at the Sveti Nikole Volunteer Fire Dept which will involve a BBQ, beers and rakija.
Saturday 20th May – National Firefighters Day
As National Firefighters Day will occurring on Saturday this year we thought this would be an opportunity for team members to attend a number of events around the country representing the charity and catching up with some old firefighter friends.
If you are interested in coming along all we ask is that you arrange your flights and transport to get to Macedonia. If you arrive Wednesday 17th May we will can make arrangements to collect you form the airport. However, as it will be such a busy time for us projects will be running we ask if you can make your own arrangements if you arrive on another date.
Returning to the airport will obviously depend on when you leave and where you will be staying when or if you attend the national firefighters day ceremony.
Accommodation has become increasingly scarce in Sveti Nikole these days. ‘Bobby Balls’ is no longer an option and the Lotus Hotel is often full. There is the floor at the volunteer station and numbers will be restrictive dependant on numbers attending.
Our plan is to offer hotel accommodation in Stip which is the neighbouring town less than 10km away from Sveti Nikole. Taxi fares are incredibly cheap and dependant on numbers and costs we will try to offer booking details so everyone is in the same hotel.
We ask that anyone attending funds themselves for the flights and duration of the stay including internal travel. We will try and ensure we use the Florian minibus and ask that people contribute to fuel and insurance cost which will be a small amount. Wizzair is the only airline flying directly to Macedonia. There are flights to Skopje on Sundays, Tuesdays Wednesdays Thursday and Saturdays and flights to Ohrid on Sundays and Wednesdays at this time of year.
If you are interested in the Battlefield tour there will be a cost of £20 per head and for attending the 10th anniversary party there will be a costs of £20 per head. The charges are intended to cover costs for food for the night.
If you want to know more information and are interested or are going for it and bought your flight tickets then please contact both Steve Jordan (email@example.com) and Allan Henson (firstname.lastname@example.org)
